About
Monastery Mail is a monthly literary correspondence inspired by Old English poetry, manuscript culture, and most influentially—the Exeter Book. The project was created by Mariana Zaragoza, who studied English at the University of California, Berkeley with a minor in Medieval Studies. Her honors thesis, “The Ground Sang a Green Song: Nature and Feeling in the Exeter Book," explored environmental imagery, emotion, and embodiment within Old English poetry.Created during a year away from academia before graduate study, Monastery Mail began as a way to continue engaging with medieval literature beyond the university classroom while helping financially support future graduate study through original translation, artwork, and physical correspondence. For academic or professional inquiries unrelated to Monastery Mail, please contact through LinkedIn.

Learn Old English
This section is an ongoing educational project created as part of my own study of the language. As I continue learning, I am building lessons, activities, and resources that I hope will be useful to others exploring Old English as well.Because this project is still developing, content may be revised, expanded, or corrected over time. While I strive for accuracy and rely on reputable sources whenever possible, this site should be considered a learning resource rather than an authoritative academic reference.Suggestions, corrections, and feedback are always welcome and help make the project better for everyone.
